What is borage?
Borage (Borago officinalis) is a member of the broadleaf family and is also known as cucumber herb due to the cucumber-like taste of its leaves . Even though the borage plant is used as a spice in the kitchen , regular consumption of the herb is not recommended due to the various alkaloids it contains.
In contrast,the seeds of the borage plant, from which the oil is produced by cold pressing and without the use of hexane , can be consumed without hesitation as they are free of alkaloids .
Borage seeds are rich in oils and unsaturated fatty acids, including gamma-linolenic acid, linoleic acid, oleic acid and palmitic acid[1].
What is gamma-linolenic acid and what effect does it have?
Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is a polyunsaturated fatty acid that belongs to the omega-6 fatty acids .
It is produced in the human and animal body from linoleic acid , but can also be absorbed from other vegetable oils [2 ].
Other vegetable oils that are considered a good source of gamma-linolenic acid are pomegranate seed oil, evening primrose oil and hemp oil.
