What is licorice root?
Licorice root refers to the root of the licorice plant. It grows in various regions of the world, including southern Russia, the Mediterranean region, parts of Asia and southern areas of Europe. The licorice genus with the botanical name Glycyrrhiza glabra, also known as real licorice, is increasingly being used.
As the name suggests, the licorice plant has a sweet taste. The root itself tastes up to 50 times sweeter than conventional household sugar, which is why liquorice root extract is often used to flavour tobacco products, drinks and food.
