What is L-cysteine?
L-cysteine is a proteinogenic amino acid. Alongside L-methionine , it is the only amino acid that contains sulphur. It is also semi-essential for adults, which means that the body can produce the protein building block itself if sufficient essential amino acids are available. L-cysteine is essential for newborn children and infants because they do not yet have the necessary enzymes to synthesize L-cysteine[1].
L-cysteine is used in the body to build important proteins, such as keratin, which is the basic building block for hair, skin and nails. In addition, cysteine is one of the components of L-glutathione. [2]
In which foods does L-cysteine occur naturally?
