What is Now Foods Plant Enzymes?
One capsule of Now Foods Plant Enzymes contains 12,500 HUT protease, 2,500 HUT acid-stable protease, 2,500 DU amylase, 750 FIP lipase, 500 CU cellulase, 6,000 FCCPU papain from papaya and 5,000 bromelain from pineapple.
Protease can break down proteins and peptides[1]Protease is therefore involved in the processing and utilization of protein-containing food, such as fish, meat, eggs, nuts or legumes.
Amylase plays an important role in sugar metabolism[2 ] . It can break down carbohydrates into glucose and in this way supplies our cells with energy.
The lipase enzyme is involved in fat digestion[3 ] and can break down fats and split off their fatty acids.
Papain and bromelain also belong to the protein-splitting enzymes. The bromelain used in Now Foods Plant Enzymes was obtained from the stem of the pineapple plant , in which it occurs naturally. Papain was extracted from the papaya , which is naturally found in high concentrations in the seeds.
Cellulases are enzymes that can break down cellulose to ß-glucose[4]. They are mainly produced by symbiotic bacteria in the stomachs of herbivorous ruminants.
