What is selenium?

Selenium is one of the essential trace elements and is a component of various enzymes. The body cannot produce selenium itself, but it is vital for it[1].

What effect does selenium have?

Selenium is involved in numerous processes in the body. As an antioxidant , it plays an important role in the immune system. It is essential for the formation of thyroid hormones and plays a role in sperm production[1].

The following statements about the effect of selenium have been scientifically proven:

  • Selenium contributes to normal spermatogenesis
  • Selenium contributes to the maintenance of normal hair
  • Selenium contributes to the maintenance of normal nails
  • Selenium contributes to the normal function of the immune system
  • Selenium contributes to the normal function of the thyroid gland
  • Selenium contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress

As selenium is involved in many important reactions in the body, a long-term selenium deficiency can lead to various consequences.

How does a selenium deficiency manifest itself?

If the selenium metabolism is disturbed, e.g. due to a genetic mutation, this can lead to a selenium def iciency in the body. As a result, the normal function of the immune system and sperm production may be impaired.
A lack of selenium in the diet is rather rare in European countries[1].

Where is selenium found?

The body cannot produce selenium itself, but must ingest it through food. The trace element is found in animal and plant foods . However, the amount of selenium in plant sources depends on the selenium content of the soil.

Animal selenium foods are mainly fish, such as tuna, herring or shrimp. Eggs and meat can also be good sources of selenium, as animal feed is enriched with selenium in the EU.

One plant source of selenium is the Brazil nut. The intake of one medium-sized Brazil nut alone can cover the daily requirement of selenium. Other sources include wheat and oat bran, rice, mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms, white beans, broccoli and asparagus.[2]

To prevent the consequences or symptoms of selenium deficiency, selenium supplements can be useful in addition to a balanced diet.

In addition to Now Foods Selenium with 100mcg per dosage , you will also find Now Foods Selenium capsules with a dosage of 200 mcg in our store.
