What are omega-3 fatty acids and what are the effects of omega-3 fatty acids?
Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids and are essential for our body. Our body cannot produce omega-3 fatty acids itself, so they must be obtained from food. The most important omega-3 fatty acids include
- α-linolenic acid (ALA)
- Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)
- Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)
α-Linolenic acid (ALA) is a precursor and must first be converted into the active forms DHA and EPA.
DHA is particularly important for brain activity. With the intake of certain amounts, DHA takes on the following important functions in our body:
