What does camu camu look like and where does it come from?
Camu camu (Myrciaria dubia) is a plant species from the Amazon region. The shrub grows in the western Amazon regions, particularly in Peru, where it reaches a height of 3 - 6 meters. The plant bears white flowers from July to September, which ripen from December to April and turn into red fruits.
What is in the fruit?
Even though the fruit of the camu camu is not particularly large (approx. 3 centimetres), it contains a large amount of minerals, trace elements, vitamins and secondary plant substances. Camu camu is particularly well known for its high vitamin C content. The fruit contains 40 times more vitamin C than an orange. It also contains vitamins B1, B2 and B3. In addition to beta carotene, the fruit also contains calcium, iron, potassium, copper, magnesium, manganese and zinc.
